Research
The documentary trail, family reconstruction and unresolved questions surrounding Richard Newhouse. Facts, hypotheses and rejected routes are retained together so the work can be audited.
Richard Newhouse, 1823–1908
Richard Newhouse was baptised on 20 November 1823 at St John’s, Stanwick, Yorkshire, the son of James and Jane Newhouse. The 1871 census places him at Bowdon, Cheshire, with a Yorkshire birthplace. His civil death is recorded on 30 November 1908 in the Altrincham district.
He married Margaret “Peggy” Crompton at St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, on 29 March 1855. The marriage record describes him as a 32-year-old Manchester merchant and names his father as James Newhouse, farmer. Richard later married Annie; her burial record records that she died at Bowdon on 11 November 1921 and describes her as Richard’s second wife.

The direct family line
James Newhouse and Jane Newhouse
Parents of Richard Newhouse. Richard’s 1823 baptism names James and Jane; Richard’s 1855 marriage independently identifies his father James as a farmer.
Richard Newhouse and Margaret “Peggy” Crompton
Known children presently established in the dossier: Edith Crompton Newhouse and Henry W. Crompton Newhouse.
Edith Crompton Newhouse, 1856–1904
Born in 1856 and associated with Rusholme and Stockport. She married William Fletcher Beckett (1853–1924) in the Altrincham registration district in 1879.
The Beckett children
The descendant investigation continues through Marguerite Amy Beckett.
Marguerite Amy Beckett and David Stanley Morrison
Marguerite Amy Beckett married David Stanley Morrison in 1909. Their identified son was Philip Stanley Morrison.
Philip Stanley Morrison
This is the last fully established generation before the current candidate link.
Living Person A and Living Person B
Living Person A is the candidate birth registered in Bucklow in 1940. A 1964 Bucklow marriage to Living Person B is a strong possible continuation of the Morrison line, but the birth certificate and marriage identity have not yet been obtained. Later children must therefore remain unconfirmed.
Branches tested
Henry W. Crompton Newhouse
Baptised at Bowdon on 22 August 1866; the register explicitly names Richard and Margaret Newhouse as his parents. He appears at Bowdon in 1881 and Moss Side in 1891. No secure spouse or children have been established.
Richard’s brothers and sisters
The working tree shows Mary (born 1809), Margaret (1812), William (1814), Elizabeth (1816–1820), John (1818), Henry (1820–1895), Elizabeth Ann (1822–1886), James (about 1825–1903) and Francis (1828–1846). These entries come from the compiled family tree; individual documentary confirmation remains uneven.
Annie Newhouse
Annie died on 11 November 1921 at Bowdon and is described in the burial record as Richard’s second wife. Her maiden name has not been established and no children of this marriage have been identified.

Coded research leads
Living Persons C–F
The modern investigation examined potential family connections associated with Dubai, Hale in Cheshire and Angus, together with a possible Brighton surname connection. These observations came primarily from social-media profiles and cannot establish descent without the missing civil links.
Living Person E: Catherine / Jane hypothesis
The research considered whether Catherine and Jane might represent an alternative given name, remarriage identity or formal name change. No civil record presently proves that proposition. It remains a research question, not a conclusion.
Rejected and limited routes
- Richard Newhouse, 1802–1878: rejected because the dates and life chronology conflict with the well-documented senior Cheshire Freemason active into the early twentieth century.
- Henry W. Crompton Newhouse military merge: treated as erroneous; no secure spouse or descendants followed from it.
- John Dent Newhouse: descent from Richard was not established.
- David H. Morris: rejected as an electoral lead because Morris and Morrison are not interchangeable without supporting evidence.
- Modern social-media profiles: useful for generating hypotheses only; none independently proves a parent-child relationship.
